How to add extended ID3 tags to mp3 files

By Jal Desai | In: , , | Posted On October 30, 2009

I love music. I love by 20GB+ of music library. And I love it more when they are properly organized in an orderly fashion. That’s why I always double check ID3 tags for proper Artist, Album and Year information before adding any new mp3 song file to my library. Nowadays the music players have become so flexible that they can organize your music collection based on ID3 tags and presents you automated playlists based upon them. But for this, you need to have a music collection that has superbly well-organized ID3 tags.

While on one hand you can easily set Artist, Album, Year and Contributing Artists tags through the mp3 file properties, very few might know that you can add more information about Lyricist, Copyright, Mix artist, Recording company, Composer, Publisher, Album art and even full Lyrics into the mp3 file itself. All these information can be added to the mp3 file. All you need is a good ID3 tagging software and I think MP3Tag is the best out there. Download it and get ready to optimize your music library by adding extended ID3 tags:

1) Open MP3Tag and drag n’ drop some mp3 files into it. Select mp3 file(s), ‘Right click’ > ‘Extended tags…’

Add extended ID3 tags to mp3 files

2) In the window that appears, you can edit the existing extended tags or make your own.

Add extended ID3 tags to mp3 files

3) Press the ‘Add Field…’ button as shown above and the ‘Edit tag info’ window will appear. Use the drop down to select the desired field you want to set. Enter its value in the ‘Value’ field below. Press ‘OK’. Likewise you can set many such extended tags which are inaccessible otherwise.

4) Some of the important extended tags you would want to set are: Composer, Lyricist, Lyrics, Copyright and Website information.

How to sync audio/subtitles to video in VLC without encoding

By Jal Desai | In: , , | Posted On October 29, 2009

Ever found yourself in quite a baffling situation where you play your favorite movie on your computer but it’s hardly pleasing to eyes and ears? That happens when the audio and/or subtitles is not in sync with the video. Nowadays, you may find rips of DVDs and Bluray discs which are not properly encoded. The result is unsynchronized audio and video. One solution is to have your own video editing software, a technical know how and at least an hour of spare time. If you don’t want any of them, then follow the trick:

1) Download VLC Player and install it, if you haven’t got it yet.

2) Open the video file in VLC Player.

3) Click ‘Tools’ > ‘Track Synchronization’

Sync tracks with audio in VLC

4) In the windows that appears, you can change the values in milliseconds to get the desired results – right away.

Sync tracks with audio in VLC

If audio and/or subtitles are lagging behind: Use + to advance the audio and/or subtitles to match the video.

If video is lagging behind: Use – to slow down audio and/or subtitles to match the video.

You can even change the speed of subtitles in frames per second to get optimum results. Most videos have frame-rate of either 23.976 or 25 FPS. The best part is, you can tweak the synchronization on trial and error basis without encoding the video which saves time!

How to increase volume of streaming videos

By Jal Desai | In: , , , | Posted On October 5, 2009

Increase volume of streaming videosThis happens every now and then. You are watching a really good video on YouTube or any other video hosting site but the only glitch you face is that the volume of the video is really low. The worst part is there is nothing much you can do except for maxing out your speaker’s volume. Most of the times this trick turns out to be a mediocre solution. But here is a quick and efficient way to go about it. For this you need to have VLC Player installed on your computer. I am not sure if Media Player Classic (with K-Lite Codec Pack) can do this job. So, install VLC player and let’s get started.

1) Open VLC Player and click ‘Media’ > ‘Streaming’.

VLC Player - Click 'Streaming'

2) In the window that appears, click the ‘Network’ tab. Choose ‘HTTP’ as the protocol and paste the link of the video in the ‘Address’ box. Make sure you does not include ‘http://’ again.

VLC Player - Placing URL with HTTP protocol

3) Additionally, check mark ‘Show more options’ and you will be able tweak the advanced options like caching and start time of the video. Click ‘Stream’.

4) When the video starts playing, you can increase the volume of the video by 400% just by sliding the volume control of VLC player. Enjoy!

iPods increase in weight with more songs – says research

By Jal Desai | In: , , | Posted On August 4, 2009

This is funny but if you believe in the research results, this might give you an eerie feeling. A research was done recently to see whether inserting more and more songs into an iPod or MP3 players make them actually heavy. The results turned out to be shocking.

The results showed that iPods, iPhones and MP3 players get a ‘little’ heavy upon installing files in them. The tests were done by weighing an empty iPod and a full one. The difference turned out to be 0.4 grams. Upon filling 3500 songs in a 16GB iPhone, it weighed 133.6 grams compared to an empty iPhone which weighed 133.2 grams. Professor Roger Banks quoted that this was for the first time a digital data has been measured in a real world measuring unit. We all know it is made up of 0s and 1s but the ratio of ones to zeros actually seems to make a difference. Further research is being carried on to ascertain whether different file formats weigh differently with the same file size. [via]

How to integrate subtitles to a video quickly and neatly

By Jal Desai | In: , , | Posted On July 22, 2009

I am a movie freak. And I know many of you also are. I love to see hi-res DVD and Bluray films on my laptop but many films does not have subtitles and it sometimes gives me hard times to grope up that important word. That’s why I download proper subtitles from OpenSubtitles, AllSubs, DivXSubtitles, etc. There are times when subtitles become inevitable when you watch movies in languages you don’t know.

Here, I am going to show you how to integrate the downloaded subtitles seamlessly and quickly to your video file. The point here is, we are not going to encode the video by hardcoding the subtitles on it. This will degrade the quality of the video and the subtitles will look jagged and tacky. We will use a tool called MKVToolnix to overlay the subtitles onto the video. So first, download MKVToolnix, install it and run it.

1) Drag and drop the movie file in the ‘Input files:’ box. Then, drag and drop the downloaded subtitle file into it.

2) The subsequent box will show the video, audio and subtitle tracks individually. You can keep or remove any of them by selecting/deselecting the checkbox. But you don’t want to do that. Keep everything checked. Once you click on the individual track (say, video) the ‘General track options’ will become active. Set those preferences accordingly. (See the image below)

Note: Set the ‘Default track flag’ to ‘yes’ for all tracks. This will enable subtitles (and ofcourse, video and audio too) to display by default.

3) The next step is to set the destination for the output. Note that the file thus generated will be a .mkv file. Click on ‘Start muxing’ button. For a movie size ranging from 700MB to 1.5GB, it will take upto a maximum of 5 minutes on a decent computer with 1GHz or more processor.

Now you can enjoy the film with decent looking subtitles. The best part is that the video does not get encoded which saves the quality of the video and the muxing time. This is what the final output will look like:

WMP: How to make ‘Most Played Songs’ auto-playlist

By Jal Desai | In: , , , , | Posted On May 26, 2009

Most you must still be preferring Windows Media Player over other music players and why not? It is versatile, organizes your music pretty well, it comes bundled with Windows and does its job quite good. I personally prefer Windows Media Player 12 (which is the latest version in Windows 7) and AIMP2. Many other music players like iTunes can generate auto-playlists based upon Artists, Album, Genre, Play count, etc. Sadly, in WMP you manually have to sort them out and then make a playlist. What if you want to make an auto-playlist of your ‘most played songs’. Here’s a very simple trick.

1) Open WMP and on the left pane click on ‘Music’.

WMP 12 - Left pane

2) Once you get the list of all the songs, right-click on the column title and click on ‘Choose columns…’

WMP 12 - Choose columns...

3) In the window that appears, check ‘Play Count’ and click OK.

WMP 12 - Play count

4) You will see a new column ‘Play Count’ is added. Click on it and your list of songs will get sorted according to the number of times a particular song was played. By sorting it in a ‘Descending’ manner, you now have your most played songs listed. Double click on the first song and the whole list will get into the ‘Now Playing’ list. You’re done.

Windows Live Movie Maker Beta - Utter Crap!

By Jal Desai | In: , | Posted On January 25, 2009

Sure something has gotten into Microsoft when they developed Windows Live Movie Maker Beta. Now a part of Windows Live essentials, this version of Windows Movie Maker is just next to crap. At least it seems so. Yesterday I had some videos to decorate and so I merrily opened Windows Live Movie Maker for the first time after installation and to my surprise, this was all I could see:

The interface is no doubt clean, but it is really missing some core components which were available in the previous versions. Most of the options are just not there. You cannot insert title/ending credits, no representation in the form of frames, cutting multiple parts of a video is tiresome, very less transitions and effects options are some of the glitches. Before going ahead, see another screenshot:

Did you see that? That’s all we have. Just 3-4 transitions and 7-8 effects options. That’s it. You cannot change the timing for how long a particular effect should last. Here’s one another screenshot of the ‘Edit’ menu:

Now if you want a captioned video with some text, then you use that ‘Textbox’ to place some text on your video. But hey wait…! There is no option for how long! It will put the text on the entire length of the video. That’s very annoying. Not to mention you cant create any credits for your video because there are no such options available.

Now when you have hardly managed to make a nice video in the Windows Live Movie Maker Beta, the moment you click ‘Save’, you realize that you can save your video in just one format (.WMV) and that too in just two resolutions. What if I want to save it as a .MPG or .AVI file? If Microsoft can offer native support for DivX and XviD formats in Windows 7, then why they compromise when it comes to saving a video file in multiple formats. And why just two resolutions? Well, as I said, this is just a Beta. Hope things get better by the time the final version is out.
