Wi-Fi to replace Bluetooth by mid 2010

By Jal Desai | In: , | Posted On October 15, 2009

Wi-Fi to replace Bluetooth by mid 2010 This is what the trade group called ‘The Wi-Fi Alliance’ has to say -  “A new wireless specification called Wi-Fi Direct is all set to make its entry by mid 2010.” Formerly known as Wi-Fi peer-to-peer, this new specification will be a super advanced version of Bluetooth as we know it.

This specification does not require a wireless hub and any device certified as Wi-Fi Direct will be able to connect with each other seamlessly as it would do in case of Bluetooth. The Wi-Fi Alliance further states that, a software update will be made available for older devices so there is nothing to lose for those who already have Wi-Fi enabled devices sans the Wi-Fi Direct specification.

Electronic gadget makers will surely grab the opportunity to make every device Wi-Fi enabled to fully enjoy the power of Wi-Fi Direct. This ultimately means that in less than a year, you may be able to transfer files across multiple Wi-Fi enabled devices, transfer songs and videos to your portable player, record TV shows directly on your computer – all wirelessly. The possibilities are endless because this will forever change our modus oprendi to transfer digital data across devices.

It is now just a matter of sitting down and wait for the ‘Wireless Revolution’ to happen!

ESET Antivirus for Symbian

By Jal Desai | In: , | Posted On October 11, 2009

ESET Antivirus for Symbian The evil is everywhere. The virtual world is no exception. If you thought your digital data in your computer is secured because you have a strong antivirus application running then you are probably wrong. With the advent of technology and thereby the rise of electronic gadgets, malicious codes in the form of viruses and trojans have paved their way to pendrives, iPods, mp3 players and cell-phones.

That’s right, a cell phone is as vulnerable to virus attacks as your computer. Viruses can creep in your smart-phone via blue tooth or an unsecured Wi-Fi network and the after-effects are not very pleasant. To tackle this out, ESET, makers of one of the very best PC antivirus suites, has introduced an antivirus application for cell phones. And to make that grin on your face a little bigger, this ESET Mobile Antivirus is a freeware.

ESET Antivirus for Symbian

Features of ESET Mobile Antivirus:

  3. On-Demand Protection: Scans at specified time and specified locations; maintains a log
  4. Quarantine facility: Maintains a folder for infected objects. This helps you identify those false positives which you can restore them back.
  5. Automatic updation of program modules and virus definitions: updates can be downloaded at user specified intervals.
  6. User friendly: With a very intuitive GUI, ESET Mobile Antivirus is darn easy to use.

ESET Mobile Antivirus has a strikingly small setup file of just 384KB which can be instantly downloaded. Moreover it is free. So all those Symbian smartphone owners, what are you waiting for. Download the little master. But before you do, please note that the application runs on following platforms:

Nokia launches laptop with SIM card slot – Booklet 3G

By Jal Desai | In: , | Posted On August 24, 2009

Some interesting news is coming our way. Nokia, the mobile phone giant, has rolled up sleeves and has entered the laptop race. Nokia recently launched Booklet 3G – a brand new netbook power packed with some usual and some not so usual features. Why is this netbook important? Well, it comes from a company that changed the face of cell phones all around the world so this netbook surely seems like a big deal.

Of course when it comes from Nokia, the Booklet 3G has to be connectivity-centric. The specifications say that it has integrated 3G wireless module, Bluetooth, a SIM card slot which definitely makes it a laptop-cum-mobile phone, A-GPS with Ovi maps, HDMI output all packed inside a sophisticated aluminium body weighing no more than 1.25 kg (2.7 lbs). Nokia claims the Booklet 3G’s battery life to be 12 hours which is not so great for a netbook but pretty decent. However, there is still no indications about the price and the date of the official release to the public which means Nokia fanboys have to wait a little bit more to get their hands dirty on this netbook-cum-mobile phone. iPods increase in weight with more songs – says research

By Jal Desai | In: , , | Posted On August 4, 2009

This is funny but if you believe in the research results, this might give you an eerie feeling. A research was done recently to see whether inserting more and more songs into an iPod or MP3 players make them actually heavy. The results turned out to be shocking.

The results showed that iPods, iPhones and MP3 players get a ‘little’ heavy upon installing files in them. The tests were done by weighing an empty iPod and a full one. The difference turned out to be 0.4 grams. Upon filling 3500 songs in a 16GB iPhone, it weighed 133.6 grams compared to an empty iPhone which weighed 133.2 grams. Professor Roger Banks quoted that this was for the first time a digital data has been measured in a real world measuring unit. We all know it is made up of 0s and 1s but the ratio of ones to zeros actually seems to make a difference. Further research is being carried on to ascertain whether different file formats weigh differently with the same file size. [via]
